چکیده

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel was a prominent comparative anatomist and active lecturer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is most well known for his descriptions of phylogenetic trees, studies of radiolarians, and illustrations of vertebrate embryos to support his biogenetic law [4] and Darwin?s work with evolution [5]. Haeckel aggressively argued that the development of an embryo repeats or recapitulates the progressive stages of lower life forms and that by studying embryonic development one could thus study the evolutionary history of life on earth.

Haeckel’s embryos: fraud not proven

Through the last half of the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth, no scientist more vigorously defended Darwinian theory than the German Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919). More people learned of the new ideas through his voluminous publications, translated into numerous languages, than through any other source, including Darwin’s own writings. He enraged many of his contemporaries, e...

There are accounts of the ideas of Raspail, Muller, Schwann, Remak, and Kolliker as well as Virchow. Duchesneau traces a shift from an anti-vitalistic programme to Muller's emphasis on the living ...

Charles Darwin's Reception in Germany and What Followed

In Germany, Charles Darwin’s thinking was accepted very quickly after the publication of On the Origin of Species in November, 1859. This was due, in no small measure, to the fact that a translation by the noted German paleontologist Heinrich Georg Bronn appeared in April, 1860, only months after the original publication [1]. Bronn’s own research led him to several insights that paralleled thos...
